Fred Dispense Plus
Overview
There are several ways to search for a drug during dispensing. This article demonstrates how to look up a drug using various methods:
- Search by Drug Code
- Search by PBS (NHS) Code
- Search by Streamlined Code
- Search for Generic Listings only
- Search Fred POS for a Drug (Question Mark Dispensing)
Search by Drug Code

Enter the unique Fred Dispense drug code.
The drug code is displayed in the Code field within the Drug Notes on the Drug screen (Lists menu > Drugs).
Search by PBS Code (NHS Code)
- Type a forward slash (/) followed by the unique NHS Code.
For example, to find Amoxycillin Capsules 250mg, type /1884E. - A list of all Drugs currently listed with the PBS Code will be displayed.
Search by Streamlined Code
- Type * followed by the Streamlined Code.
A list of all valid PBS codes currently listed with the Streamlined Code will be displayed. - Select the relevant brand. The Authority Number Endorsement popup will display with the Streamlined Code already added.
Search for generic drug listings only

To restrict your search to generic items, add an asterisk (*) at the start.
For example, if you search for SIMVASTATIN 40mg by entering SIMVA 40, several generic and branded entries will be returned.
However, if you enter *SIMVA 40, the branded entries will not be included in the search results.
Search Fred POS for a drug (Question mark dispensing)
If you use Fred POS, you can access the POS Database for OTC or S3 items. Dispensing OTC and S3 items this way ensures your stock-on-hand accuracy and dispensing history are maintained.
- In the Drug or Repeat Number field, type ? followed by the item name. For example, to search for Berocca, type ?berocca.
All available products in your POS database are displayed for selection.
Scripts dispensed this way will show in the label preview screen with the item description enclosed in brackets, and when the script is sold at the till, the stock will be deducted from stock on hand in Fred Office.
