PBS drug only showing as non-PBS option – incorrect Prescriber Type

One scenario contributing to a PBS item displaying as non-PBS only is when the prescriber selected is set to a Prescriber Type that does not have the authority to prescribe a particular PBS listing.

For example, Lipitor 10mg shows as a non-PBS option due to prescriber being set to Optometrist instead of a Medical or Nurse Practitioner.

The issue is not so obvious from the dispense screen as the script type still displays ‘PBS’—although note that the Prescriber field shows Optometrist.


The giveaway is usually when the issue affects a common drug and is only occurring for a particular script or patient. This is because the Prescriber is likely autopopulated by the script or patient data.

To resolve:

1. Open the Prescriber record and check that the Prescriber Type is accurate. 
2. If incorrect, update Prescriber Type and Save.
3. Reselect the drug.
